The TOEFL short for (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is considered by many as the most comprehensive ACADEMIC English test available. It evaluates an individual’s ability to understand and use English in an academic setting. This standardized test is commonly required by colleges and universities in the US for non-native speakers who wish to pursue an undergraduate course in an American university. At the same time, it is a common measure of English proficiency used by numerous business institutions, government agencies, and scholarship programs.

It is recognized by more than 9,000 colleges, universities and agencies in more than 130 countries, including Australia, Canada, the U.K. and the United States.

WE checked the minimum scores required in order to be accepted in universities in the United States. For stanford university, the minimum TOEFL score required in order to be considered for admission is in three (3) types of test. The minimum scores required are 250 for the computer-based test, 600 for the paper-based test and 100 for the internet-based test. For more information please see this link. For MIT or Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the minimum required scores are 500 for Paper Based Test (PBT) and 90 for Internet Based Test (iBT). They also have a recommended score which is 600+ and 100+ respectively. According to them the minimums are in place to ensure the level of English proficiency. Technically, MIT offers no English as a Second Language (ESL) programs, and English is the language of MIT. For more information please see this link. To PROVE ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY, Harvard University has Two (2) requirements. First for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) academic test, the minimum score is 7.0. Second, the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic, minimum score of 68 and finally The Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), minimum score is 100.
