What stone do you use to fill a gabion basket

For gabions placed on the ground, you can simply push your rock fill directly into the top of the basket and attach the cover mesh. You don't need any loaders or bobcats to scoop the rocks from unmanageable heights and fill the baskets.
What stone do you use to fill your gabion baskets?
Choose local rocks
You can use local rocks that are provided to you free of charge.
Whatever material you choose, always make sure the size is between 80 mm - 200 mm.
Use granite stone
The flat side of the granite you can see above should always face the walls of the basket.
This will ensure a uniform appearance and prevent bulging.
Use small round stones
Smaller round stones are less likely to bulge the basket, but still require thicker wire (4 mm or 5 mm).
These are ideal for projects that require higher structure.
You have other ways to fill gabion baskets
The most obvious options for filling gabion baskets inexpensively are to use old items that you can buy second-hand, or from construction sites or building sites at extremely cheap prices:.
Old bricks
These are excellent options for filling gabion baskets very cheaply. You may be able to buy these cheaply from a local construction company or building site (as they may have broken bricks or goods that need to be disposed of). You can also find cheap bricks from local sellers on places like Facebook marketplaces.
Old paving stones
If you're redecorating your entire garden, then pulling up old paving stones (and then breaking them into smaller pieces) will allow you to fill your gabion basket easily and inexpensively.
Outline with expensive stones, then fill with inexpensive stones
Another option for filling gabion baskets cheaply is to invest a little money in a small number of more expensive stones (for the visible outer layer) and then fill the middle with cheaper stones or gravel. This is a good idea because it stays aesthetically pleasing and still means your gabion basket looks great!
Ask your neighbors!
Neighbors are always working on their houses and many will be removing walls. Those walls they are removing will be full of bricks that are no longer needed - so they can become filler for your gabion basket! If there's a whatsapp group or facebook group in your area, it's worth asking there if anyone is planning any home improvements.
Wine bottles
If you save your wine bottles, you can actually fill your gabion basket with them. This is a really quirky option for filling gabion baskets on the cheap - and it looks great too! It looks very sleek and cool - and we really like it!
You can even choose glass or plastic bottles to get a unique look while saving materials and recycling in the process.
It is required that the items that you are using are hard, heavy, durable, and can also drain water.
